Sprint-zero or Iteration zero typically refers to and includes the activities that are often carried out in the inception stage of a project.

The Disciplined Agile® Delivery (DAD) portion of the DA™ process tool kit includes an explicit Inception phase – sometimes called a project initiation phase, start-up phase, or iteration/sprint zero – which is conducted before Construction. The primary purpose of this phase is to do just enough work to get your team going in the right direction. You will likely need to perform some initial requirements modeling, some initial architecture modeling, some initial planning, and other organizational activities to do this.

The goal of exploratory life-cycles is to produce MVP. The team will typically use other life-cycle modules to produce releases or increments after the MVP is established

• Minimum Viable Product (MVP) . An MVP is an investment in learning, an experiment where your goal is to explore what a potential customer wants. To run this experiment you'll create a version of a product via the least effort possible so as to be used for validated learning about your potential customers. MVPs are experiments to explore a hypothesis about what your customers really want. They aren't to the “real” running version of your end product because they aren't at the level of quality or scale that you would produce for the end product. Having said that, I have seen MVPs evolve into a real product, or more accurately a real MBI, but more often than not they evolve into something more along the lines of a prototype (which is fine because they're an investment in learning and were never meant to be the real thing). A team typically runs the experiment with a subset of your potential customers to test a new idea, to collect data about it, and thereby discover customers are actually interested in. Note that the term MVP was coined by Frank Robinson at SyncDev in 2001 popularized by Eric Ries in Lean Startup in 2011.

Inception is not explicity depicted in these life-cycle models because as they get into continuous delivery phase, they release frequently. It presumes that Inception activities may have been done in the past and may be done periodically - but not every iteration or for every delivery.

Product development is complex and many of the teams - especially those working on enterprise scale projects can ignore process goals only at their own risk.

The lean principle is "Defer commitment". Making commitments too early can be harmful in process improvements

Defer Commitment does not mean that teams should be flaky or irresponsible about their decision making. Rather, the opposite: This Lean principle encourages team to demonstrate responsibility by keeping their options open and continuously collecting information, rather than making decisions without the necessary data.

Customers are delighted when the offered products and services not only just meet the expectations, but (whenever possible to do so) even surpass them

Reuse enables utilizing existing enterprise assets. It does not lend itself easily to customizing the solution.
