CompTIA 220-1202 CORE 2 Certification FAQ

The CompTIA A+ Core 2 (exam 220-1202) is one of two exams required to earn the CompTIA A+ certification, which is an industry-standard credential for entry-level IT professionals. This exam specifically focuses on essential skills related to operating systems, security, software troubleshooting, and operational procedures. Successfully passing both Core 1 (220-1201) and Core 2 (220-1202) demonstrates a foundational understanding of hardware, software, networking, troubleshooting, and security, preparing individuals for various technical support roles.
This exam is ideal for aspiring IT professionals, help desk technicians, technical support specialists, and field service technicians. It's designed for individuals with approximately 12 months of hands-on experience in an IT support role who want to validate their foundational IT skills and launch their tech careers.
The average annual salary for CompTIA A+ certified professionals in the U.S. generally ranges from approximately $45,000 to $70,000 per year, depending on factors such as experience, specific job role (e.g., IT support specialist, help desk technician), location, and industry. Entry-level positions typically fall within the $40,000 to $50,000 range. With 1-4 years of experience, salaries can climb to $50,000-$65,000, and experienced professionals with 7-10 years may command $70,000-$85,000 or more.
The CompTIA A+ certification is valid for three years from the date you pass your second exam (Core 2 in this case). To renew the certification, professionals must earn 20 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within this three-year period. Renewal options include completing CompTIA CertMaster CE, earning a qualifying higher-level CompTIA certification, passing the latest release of the A+ exam, or a combination of approved training, webinars, or work experience. A yearly CE fee of $25 (totaling $75 over three years) is also required if renewing through CEU activities.
The CompTIA A+ 220-1202 Core 2 exam (V15) was launched on March 25, 2025. CompTIA typically updates its A+ exams approximately every three years to keep them current with evolving technology and industry standards. Based on this cycle, the retirement date for the 220-1202 series is estimated to be around September 2028.
The CompTIA A+ 220-1202 Core 2 exam covers five main domains:
  • Operating Systems: Installing, configuring, and maintaining Windows, understanding macOS/Linux basics, and mobile OS settings, including command-line tools and networking features.
  • Security: Applying security best practices, account policies, access control, hardening techniques, malware prevention and removal, wireless security protocols, and identifying common threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Software Troubleshooting: Methodically diagnosing and resolving common OS and application issues, utilizing logs, built-in tools, and recovery utilities, as well as troubleshooting mobile OS and application security issues.
  • Operational Procedures: Understanding common safety procedures, environmental impacts, licensing, policy concepts, proper communication techniques, and professionalism, as well as basics of scripting, remote access, and AI.
  • Cloud Computing & Virtualization: Explaining virtualization and cloud computing concepts and their applications, including installing and configuring cloud-based productivity tools.
